You may have received an email from the Australian Tax Office proposing to charge ABN holders for yet another renewal fee to renew your ABN in addition to all the other fees permits licences rates and levies demanded every month by some local state or federal department or other

I reproduce the relevant parts below

"Have your say on ABN reform You have until 31 August to comment on proposed changes to the ABN system. Have your say on ABN reform

The consultation paper will discuss possible changes to the ABN system including adjusting ABN entitlement rules, imposing conditions on ABN holders, and introducing a renewal process including a renewal fee."

You've guessed it the ATO are proposing a tax on being a tax payer as if wasting 100 hours / year is not enough of a penalty to be using this antiquated system - proposed by GST John Howard of the liberal national party in the year 2000 with assurances that there would be no charge for registering for or holding an ABN

I trust that this demonstrates the present incumbents have no intention of tax reform whatsoever

Mike Jessop will abolish both Income Tax and GST if elected
